Ngorongoro Crater

(March, 2022)

While on safari in Ngorongoro Crater we were lucky enough to spend extended time with this handsome lion and his brothers.  What an experience!

First, Ngorongoro Crater is an experience not to be missed.  As Africas largest intact caldera (the depression that remains after a volcano erupts), it is home to an incredible example of biodiversity including the Big 5.  That’s where this guy comes in.

We had spent the top half of the day on the far side of the crater and were starting the final leg before our ascent out when we happened upon a group of three brothers resting in the afternoon sun.  Later, we saw a fourth brother snoozing under some trees.

As you can imagine we were thrilled to see these gorgeous guys up close, or at least close enough.  Our Nomad Tanzania guide possessed the knowledge and experience to know exactly where to position us for maximum viewing without disturbing the brothers.  We moved several times to be respectful of their space.

Lucky for us, this fella decided to investigate something that snagged his attention. We found out later that a monkey had gotten into a safari vehicle when the passengers stepped out for a bathroom break.  The screams carried far enough to pique the interest of His Majesty which allowed us to follow along.

Being afforded the opportunity to have extended time with these lions was a highlight of the day and one of our favorite safari experiences.
